<p>This book examines the Franco-Ontarian reality through the telling of an individual journey, that is representative of a generation. This account integrates autobiography, reflection, readings and research. A contemplation on the University of Ottawa and its historical role, which is the culmination of this particular journey, is the primary theme of the book.<br>Its fundamental question: what does it mean to be Franco-Ontarian? Does it still make sense to hold on to a particular collective identity? Identities are often deadly, unfortunately, as history reveals. <br><br>In the absolute, we are all human, brothers and sisters, fragile, destined for certain death, dust in the infinite, insignificant in space-time. "What is a man in infinity?" Pascal would have said. Why, then, should we cling to our particularities, drape them over ourselves with pride, or brandish them as banners? It's to glory in the accidents of one's selfhood, the chance of one's birth, the contingencies of one's true nature, that of being a human among other humans.<br><br>And yet, nothing can be done about it. We can't choose our roots: they were there before we were born, and they pushed us towards the light. Everyone comes from a family, a group, a space, a culture, a people, and a nation. For we are not abstractions, nor pure spirits. We are embodied in a collective. The individual carries the group within him, and vice versa. With all the wealth and suffering that entails.</p><p>Ce livre, intégrant autobiographie, réflexion, lectures, recherches, se penche sur la réalité franco-ontarienne à travers l’évocation d’un parcours individuel, représentatif d’une génération. Une réflexion sur l’Université d’Ottawa et son rôle historique, aboutissement de ce parcours, y occupe une place de choix.<br><br>Son interrogation fondamentale : à quoi cela rime-t-il d’être Franco-Ontarien ? Cela a-t-il encore un sens de s’attacher à une identité collective particulière ? Les identités sont souvent meurtrières, comme l’histoire nous l’apprend, malheureusement. <br><br>Dans l’absolu, nous sommes tous humains, frères et sœurs, fragiles, promis à une mort certaine, poussières dans l’infini, insignifiants dans l’espace-temps. « Qu’est-ce qu’un homme dans l’infini ? », aurait dit Pascal. Alors pourquoi s’attacher à ses particularités, s’en draper avec orgueil, ou les brandir comme des étendards, s’en faire des oriflammes ? C’est se glorifier des accidents de sa personne, du hasard de sa naissance, des contingences de sa nature véritable, celle d’être un humain parmi d’autres humains. <br><br>Et pourtant, rien n’y fait. On ne choisit pas ses racines : elles étaient là avant nous, avant qu’on sorte de terre, et elles nous ont poussé vers la lumière. Chacun est issu d’une famille, d’un groupement, d’un espace, d’une culture, d’un peuple, voire d’une nation. Cela nous colle à la peau, malgré qu’on en ait. Car nous ne sommes pas des abstractions, ni de purs esprits. L’incarnation se fait dans une collectivité. L’individu porte le groupe en lui, et inversement. Avec les richesses et les souffrances qui en découlent.</p>
