Ce Concile a entendu réunir le ministère de la Parole et le ministère de l’Eucharistie dans une vision organique et ecclésiale du presbytérat. Mais les crises culturelles des années qui l’ont suivi ont ravivé les tensions entre les composantes fonctionnelles de la Parole et les représentations traditionnelles de l’Eucharistie comme symbolique d’une Église sacrement du salut. This book aims to elucidate this universality of representations of priests in the Church. Starting from the Council of Trent and the Lutheran ‘desacralisation’ of the priest, taking in the conceptions of major witnesses of the French school, those of lesser known authors of the 19th century, the presbyterate of the ‘Curé d’Ars’, the different stages of the ordeal of separating the Church from the State, the emergence of the secular members of Action catholique, and the implantation of a specialised clergy in view of evangelising all of the social fabric, Mgr. Gérard Defois describes a fascinating itinerary, both a historical investigation and an in-depth sociological and theological reflection, all the way to Vatican II. The Council intended to reunite the ministry of the Word and that of the Eucharist in an organic and ecclesial vision of the priesthood. But the cultural crises of the years that followed revived the tensions between the functional component of the Word and the traditional representations of the Eucharist as symbol of a Church sacrament of salvation. By drawing on previously unknown authors and works, this passionate study reveals some unexpected questions posed throughout history.
